Michael W. Twitty is a culinary historian, food writer, former Hebrew teacher, and Talmudic sage. His second book, Koshersoul, became available in 2022.

In Koshersoul, Michael W. Twitty considers the marriage of two of the most distinctive culinary cultures in the world today: the foods and traditions of the African Atlantic and the global Jewish diaspora. To Twitty, the creation of African-Jewish cooking is a conversation of migrations and a dialogue of diasporas offering a rich background for inventive recipes and the people who create them.

Koshersoul explores how food has shaped the journeys of numerous cooks, including Twitty’s own passage to and within Judaism.

We are honoured to welcome Twitty to the Leah Posluns Theatre. The event will a discussion about his new book, followed by a round table with Rivka Campell, ED of Beth Tikvah Synagogue and Co-founder of Jews of Colour, Rob Shostak, queer multidisciplinary artist, and Ozoz Sokoh of the Kitchen Butterfly. Each of them will ask powerful questions to Twitty from their unique lens.

Twitty is known for his excellent speaking skills and wide-ranging knowledge. At this event you will learn as much about food and our history and as you will about life.

Food Sampling Post Show

Twitty and Chef Victor Uguweke, owner of the new restaurant Afrobeat Kitchen will work together to create a sampling of food for all attendees to taste and find meaning.

Food Sample: A spin on Ashkenaz cabbage rolls - Collard Greens Stuffed with Jollof Rice.

Food will be prepared at Beth Tikvah and be vegetarian.
