"Ninth Floor" Screening AND Panel Discussion
Hart House Conscious Documentary Series, the Cinema Studies Student Union and the CSI (the Cinema Studies Institute) are pleased to present a special screening of Mina Shum's newest film, "Ninth Floor". This documentary had its international premiere at TIFF this past september and was also screened at Canada's Top Ten film festival, among many other festivals. This film takes up issues of racial discrimination in an institutionalized and societal setting.
Synopsis: Over four decades after the infamous Sir George Williams Riot, Ninth Floor reopens the file on a watershed moment in Canadian race relations and one of the most contested episodes in the nation’s history. Making an audacious foray into non-fiction, writer and director Mina Shum engages the original protagonists in a compassionate cinematic exercise of reckoning and redemption.
This screening will be followed by a panel discussion with U of T professors, along with the main character, Rodney John and will be moderated by professor Kass Banning of the Cinema Studies Institute at U of T.
