Next Music from Tokyo (NMFT) is an annual tour that introduces Canadians to the most creative and skilled bands from Japan's indie and underground music scenes. The tour began in 2010 and brings a different group of Japanese bands to Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver each year.
TAMTAM is a fantastic five-piece band that started in 2008 playing dub/reggae. Over the decade they have reinvented themselves changing to post-rock/shoegaze and then to folk/neo-soul but always retaining a bit of their dub roots. Currently TAMTAM sound like Thundercat with female vocals and they are easily the most soothing, sexy and soulful band NMFT has invited to Canada.
Kougou no Goraiko-z describe themselves as Fishmans meets Number Girl. They combine funky yet tranquil dub reggae rhythms with beautifully lush guitar tones that explode into the most gloriously chaotic punk/noise when you least expect it.
imai is the beatsmith of the famed electro-hip hop duo group_inou. Even fans of rock music who dislike EDM may fall hard for the ultra-melodic, emo/punk-charged, noisy brilliance of imai's unique brand of electronic beats. With group_inou on hiatus imai welcomes the challenge of creating instrumentals strong enough to shine without his partner cp's vocals-so far he's succeeding.
Koutei Camera Girl Drei is a three-piece female idol group making their third appearance with NMFT. Their sound involves rapped lyrics over EDM instrumentals but it's the soulfulness, creativity and supreme attention to detail in production coupled with the heartfelt, raw-as-punk ebullience of the girls' on-stage performance that makes KCG Drei one of the most captivating acts in Tokyo's underground music scene.
Stereogirl is a five-piece band with a shoegaze-tinged pop punk sound heavily influenced by American and British acts such as Pavement, The Smiths, and Stone Roses. They also have a distinctively Japanese feel and a fiercely emotional side similar to NMFT fan favorites-Kinoko Teikoku. Still university students, Stereogirl have room to grow as musicians but they're writing incredibly catchy, heartfelt songs and are light years ahead of most bands in terms of stage presence.
Next Music from Tokyo prides itself in showcasing a fresh and eclectic line-up of Japanese artists and bands that put on a great show without resorting to gimmicks. The concerts are curated for an audience that is open-minded and loves high quality music of all types. NMFT is the only tour in Canada featuring multiple Japanese artists/bands and will continue its tradition of creating one of the most interesting and intense live music experiences of the year.
