The best space is the deep space. It’s a locked groove where we spontaneously shift to the simultaneous, and allow ourselves to listen, react. “In composing,” Ann E. Berthoff once observed, “everything happens at once—or it doesn’t happen at all.”

Allatonceness, the closing event of the our 40th anniversary season, will seance with the our storied message mix of freely improvised self-actualization. After all, in the constant cycle of imagined possible futures, Toronto starts making sense if you tangle with its music histories. Inspired by the Music Gallery’s legacy at the intersections of varied and seemingly disparate artistic scenes, guest curator Rea McNamara brings together new music, video, performance and site-specific installation works looping samples and gestures of our past and present genre-bending encounters.

The concert begins with a performative walking tour by artist Alvis Choi aka Alvis Parsley of St George the Martyr’s courtyard, re-activating its oral histories. In the foyer, a stacked pile of CRT monitors—alluding to tele-performances and early exchanges of artists’ videotapes—will screen works exploring the connection between image and sound from Undervolt & Co., an independent label for experimental video artists that is steadily building a significant internet archive of international contemporary video art.

Amidst a dreamy, psychedelic site-specific altar installation by Diana Vander Meulen, the main stage performances include three MG alumni: the Mridangam virtuosity of master drummer Trichy Sankaran and the devotional bangers of Tenderness (aka Chrissy Reichert) alongside an accompanying performance by dance artist Allison Peacock. With turntable artist SlowPitchSound (Cheldon Paterson) digging into the virtual crates of our audio archives to create new possibilities, expect an ecstatic evening service into past future visions.
