Memories of Galleria Mall
Memories of Galleria Mall invites you to take a step back in time at one of Toronto’s most iconic landmarks
ELAD Canada and Freed Developments help celebrate Galleria Mall at the highly-anticipated Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival exhibit, Memories of Galleria Mall by Shari Kasman
Galleria Mall, a West Toronto icon, has been a local time capsule, standing still since 1972 as the city has dramatically evolved. As the site prepares to be reimagined, Torontonians will have a rare opportunity to celebrate this landmark’s nostalgia during this year’s Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Exhibition from May 3rd to 5th.
Toronto writer, photographer and artist Shari Kasman, spent many years photographing Galleria Mall, which functioned not only as a venue for shopping, but also a hub for socializing and entertainment. Kasman recently published Galleria: The Mall That Time Forgot, a book that explores the mall’s history and how it transformed all while remaining true to its character.
“The photographs that I’ve taken over the past few years pay tribute to the essence of Galleria Mall. The mall is just one of Toronto’s hidden gems and in displaying them, we will memorialize this space,” says Kasman, who will be releasing an abridged version of her book that same weekend.
The mall is set to be transformed into a mixed-use master-planned community that will include a new community centre, expanded park, retail, and residential units, including affordable rental units. ELAD Canada and Freed Developments, the development team behind the new project, saw Kasman’s photography as an opportunity to pay homage to Galleria Mall.
The exhibition will be open to the public during the first weekend of May, on May 3rd (12-9 pm), May 4th (11 am-5 pm) and May 5th (12-4 pm) at Geary Lane (360 Geary Ave). Entry is free.
The Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival is the largest photography event in the world, and a premiere cultural experience in Canada, with exhibitions showcased at over 200 venues throughout the month of May in the Greater Toronto Area.
