Marvellous Creatures: Animals in Islamic Art

ABOUT:

Real and mythical creatures leap off the pages of legends, tales and fables in Persian, Arabic, Turkish, and Urdu in a new family-friendly exhibition at the Aga Khan Museum.

Marvellous Creatures: Animals in Islamic Art is a richly imaginative exhibition that presents creatures of air, water, fire, and earth in a breathtaking variety of artworks from the 7th to 21st centuries. Featuring manuscripts, textiles, ceramics, jewellery, glass, and metalwork — in addition to sculptures and mixed media works by contemporary Lebanese artist Mohamad-Said Baalbaki — the exhibition proves the enduring fascination with these creatures across many cultures and shares the stories that first brought them to life.

Originally organized by the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar, Marvellous Creatures: Animals in Islamic Art has been expanded to include key works from the Aga Khan Museum and other international private and public collections.
