Jonathan Roy: In Concert

Guitar or Hockey Stick: Thankfully, goalie-turned-singer-songwriter chose well.

When Jonathan Roy was 11, his mother bought him a guitar. He hardly picked it up. A gifted goaltender, Roy was single-mindedly focused on following in the footsteps of his father, NHL legend Patrick Roy. But after spending his teenage years between the pipes, and finally accepting that an NHL career was not in the cards, Jonathan returned to his guitar and prepared for a difficult conversation. "When I told [my father] that I wanted to be a musician, he thought I was completely nuts," he says.

But Jonathan was insistent and before long, Patrick connected him with another Quebec-born ’80s-icon: the sunglasses-at-night-wearing former pop star Corey Hart, who immediately recognized Jonathan’s musical potential. Hart penned Jonathan’s first single, “Daniella Denmark,” which debuted on YouTube in December 2015 and promptly blew up. Today, Jonathan is enjoying a busy rookie season as a singer-songwriter with a big voice—and even bigger ambitions. "I do want to be the next Ed Sheeran or the next Vance Joy," he says, "but the main thing is to be happy. I love to write and express my life. If I can keep doing that for the rest of my days that would be my success story."
