Introduction to Bird Drawing

Designed for avian enthusiasts, this workshop will introduce drawing techniques using an assortment of bird specimens. Using graphite pencils, participants will learn how to start a drawing, shading techniques, expressive line work and the role of light in creating texture and dimension. Instructor demonstrations and constructive feedback will help unlock the methods used by artists to depict birds in art. By the end of the workshop, students will have a solid grasp of the fundamentals that will allow them to draw birds with increased confidence. These skills will be of particular interest to birders looking to draw in their field journals.

-Artist grade graphite pencils ( H, HB & 3B)

-Artist quality sketchbook with smooth, heavy weight paper

-Kneadable eraser

-Pencil sharpener

-Optional: Fineliner ink pens (eg. Sakura Micron 0.5mm)

Instructor Bio

Alan Li is an artist with a focus on nature. He supports conservation efforts through the sale of his artwork and is active in volunteering. Alan believes that drawing can open people’s eyes to the planet’s wondrous diversity and show them that it matters.

Alan studied figure drawing, perspective and hand drawn animation at Sheridan College. After graduating, Alan spent 3 years travelling to primate sanctuaries to draw rescued chimpanzees and orangutans followed by 6 years of animating children’s television programs. He currently pursues his own art projects and keeps busy collaborating with grassroot environmental groups.
