The exhibition is an integral part of “In the Spirit of INDIGO” multicultural festival, shared with artists, partners and the larger community through art workshops, lectures and exhibitions, from May to September 2017. The Propeller Gallery was awarded an Ontario Arts Council grant and has worked with several partners to achieve the goals of the project. The challenge is to create contemporary exciting artwork with this magnificent blue pigment, used globally throughout the ages and in keeping with the spirit of indigo. The exhibition at Propeller involves 9 guest artists that represent the cultural mosaic of Ontario and work in a variety of media such as paper, fibre/textile, painting and ceramics, all with a major focus on Indigo. Several participants in the “Weekend of BLUE” Paper Dyeing/Shiburi Workshop at Paperhouse Studio, the “Inspiration INDIGO” Bilingual Ceramic Workshop organized by BRAVO-Sud and the Recycling Boro-Style workshop at Colour Vie Studio, are also taking part in the Propeller Gallery exhibition. The amazing diversity of artworks to be presented will illustrate the excitement of working with INDIGO and the contemporary usages of an ancient favorite blue pigment. A parallel group exhibition of the Festival entitled “Gampi Konshi: Dyed, Dark and Dramatic” will be held from August 16 to September 3 at The Japanese Paper Place. It highlights the use of indigo-dyed gampi by Washi artists, showing the versatility of this limited handmade paper, used for centuries for Buddhist rituals. http://www.japanesepaperplace.com
