“I'm Garth Marenghi. Author. Dreamweaver. Visionary. Plus actor. You're about to enter the world of my imagination. You are entering my DARKPLACE.”
Greetings, travelers. Can you believe it’s been 15 years since we were gifted the most significant televisual event since Quantum Leap? “Garth Marenghi’s DARKPLACE”, written, directed and starring star horror auteur Garth Marenghi, was a television program so radical, so risky, so dangerous, so goddamn crazy, that the so-called powers that be were too scared to show it. Buried by Channel 4 in the 80s, it sprang back from the dead in 2004 for an inexplicably brief one season run. Darkplace weaves the saga of cracking top doctor Rick Daglass, M.D. (former warlock) who must brave the forces of darkness haunting Darkplace Hospital in Romford, UK, situated inconveniently over the gates of Hell, while also dealing with the burden of day-to-day admin.
Garth is aided by a cast of greats: Todd Rivers as Dr. Lucien Sanchez. Madeleine Wool as Liz Asher, woman doctor and psychic. And introducing Dean Learner as “Thornton Reed”.
Do you dare barrel through all 6 terrifying episodes in one sitting? Are you a “One Track Lover”? Everyone involved with this utterly brilliant and too-short horror parody loosely modeled after Lars Von Trier’s “The Kingdom” went on to be a directing genius – Alice Lowe (Prevenge), Matthew Holness (Possum), Richard Ayoade (The Double). I guess Matt Berry didn’t direct but he’s great in everything from The Mighty Boosh to Toast of London.
Certainly the only television show in history to have only 6 episodes yet 2 of them are about a deadly mist (different mists), it’s time, my humble fabulists, to run to The Royal Cinema for a long overdue Garth Marenghi marathon, the only way you know how - by placing one leg in front of the other in quick succession – and join us as we enter your… DARKPLACE.
