Before acquiring a studio at Youngplace in January 2021, Adam Wolfond and Estée Klar were limited to their apartment, feeling that the world, now socially isolated, could finally understand the exclusion they faced together for 20 years. As a non-speaking autistic artist and poet, Wolfond turned his attention to paces and ways we need to live outside of fast-paced, ableist, neoliberalist culture. This resulted in a four-month collaborative artwork, Covid Calendar 1, part of what became the Pandemic Paces series.

The works in the series are grounded in thinking about movement, writing, and pace. Each day involved a gestural mark. Making marks of days. The feeling of the air. And over time, their movements and feelings became layered and complex.

As they write, “Art is a process of living, not necessarily an object, although these marks and captures can become objects.”

Hear first-hand from Wolfond and Klar about these works, and how they learned ways of work that can work for themselves and others, revealing the changes that we need in society.
