This lo-fi, rip-roaring homage to the American alt rock scene tells the story of Dinosaur Jr., one of the most influential bands of the 1980s. Their unmistakable, distortion-heavy sound laid the foundations for the 90s grunge scene, Gen X slacker culture and mega-hit albums like Nirvana’s Nevermind. Freakscene pulls no punches about the blood, sweat and tears of band life; guitarist and bandleader J. Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow and drummer Murph stonewall each other like dysfunctional family members. Nevertheless, filmmaker Philipp Reichenheim manages to eke out heartfelt interviews with the normally closed-off cult icons, along with alt-rock peers such as Henry Rollins, Frank Black and Kim Gordon. These close-ups, together with electrifying live tour footage from the 80s and 90s, make Freakscene an emotional, tragically funny and often noisy rollercoaster ride—and a must-see for any alt-rock fan.
