Festival will feature Toronto debut of performance art group Ikumagialiit, an all-ages takeover party presented with beloved eclectic alt-culture series, Long Winter, and more

WHAT: Harbourfront Centre brings the ‘cool’ back to Toronto this season with the second edition of the Festival of Cool, spotlighting an area that evokes both fascination and adversity –the Arctic. This all ages festival is inspired by and celebrates the International Year of Indigenous Languages with programming from across the Arctic Circle including contemporary music, film, visual art and thought-provoking panels – proving that even extreme cold can be cool. Plus, the majority of programming is FREE to attend.
Festival highlights include: the Toronto debut of Ikumagialiit (Dec. 12), a new Indigenous performance art show featuring contemporary Uaajeerneq (Greenlandic mask dance), throat singing, electric cello and beats, with hand-drawn ‘light’ and video; and The Arctic Night (Dec. 13), a choose-your-own-adventure mega-concert and immersive art experience in partnership with Toronto’s favourite winter inter-arts series, Long Winter. Dive into the contentious issue of who owns the Arctic with The Race for the Arctic (Dec. 10) lecture. Living Up North (Dec. 11), a lecture in partnership with Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, will debunk myths about day-to-day life in the Arctic, challenge Southern concepts of governance and explore alternatives for a self-governed society.
