Dumpster Raccoon: Ed Wood Double Bill!
Dumpster Raccoon Cinema presents its first ever double-bill screening!
We are paying tribute to the original dumpster raccoon of cinema, the worst director of all time, ED WOOD, with a one night only double-barrel screening of a stunning new archival digital transfer of his neglected masterpiece GLEN OR GLENDA paired with the infamous PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE - AND a LIVE pre-show performance!
Widely regarded as the WORST MOVIE OF ALL TIME, PLAN 9 is a cavalcade of astonishingly poor decisions and mis-executed blunders from its first notorious opening monologue, its sexy zombie queens, to Bela Lugosi’s last film appearance! If you have never seen it, you MUST! And if you have, you haven’t REALLY seen it til you’ve seen it with a crowd or rowdy fellow dumpster raccoons!
GLEN OR GLENDA, meanwhile, is a work deeply close to Ed Wood’s heart: a quirky semi-documentary probing, with Wood’s characteristic charming ineptitude, issues of gender in 1950s America – and Wood’s own queerness.
GLEN OR GLENDA is a movie at once at the very beginning of the sexual revolution’s attempt to articulate non-binary and trans existences (the film chronicles several trans/nb lives, including Wood’s own, in his own words, “cross-dressing”) and which we are in some ways only just catching up to – finally receiving the glorious digital transfer it deserves, courtesy AGFA, debuting right here at the Revue!
The film is also a riot – at once thrilled by its prurience (including sequences of Bela Lugosi as a gender mad scientist and an appearance by an actual horned Satan) even as it grasps, inexpertly but sincerely, to articulate the dignity and validity of the queer lives it chronicles.
