Drunktown's Finest
Trans writer-director Sydney Freeland drew upon her own experiences growing up on a Navajo reserve in developing her trailblazing debut and Sundance favourite. The film presents three sensitively drawn protagonists: Sick Boy (Jeremiah Bitsui), a father-to-be who struggles to stay out of trouble; Nizhoni (Morningstar Angeline Wilson) whom, raised by white parents, furtively begins to search out her birth parents; and Felixia (Carmen Moore), a trans woman and swimsuit calendar hopeful who lives with her traditional grandparents. When their divergent paths intersect, hidden and healing truths are revealed.
