Designing the Movies: Shallow Grave
30th Anniversary Screening!
In Danny Boyle’s feature debut, Edinburgh flatmates Christopher Eccleston, Ewan McGregor (in his first major role), and Kerry Fox get more than they bargained for when they advertise for a new fourth roommate. For this contemporary morality tale that owes a debt to both Chaucer and Alfred Hitchcock, Boyle assembles the imaginative writing, production design, cinematography, and editing team that would go on to make Trainspotting, the 1996 global hit. Their sensibilities come together in a gripping, darkly funny crime thriller about how a suitcase full of money alters the dynamic between three misanthropic friends. Much of the scant £1million budget reportedly went to building the elaborate colourful set—with production design by Kave Quinn (who recently did Emma. and Judy) and costumes by Kate Carin (Spice World, Good Omens), winning the BAFTA for Outstanding British Film and shaking up 1990s British cinema.
