Dennis Lin - Recent Works

Dennis Lin is excited to invite you to a viewing of recent works at his Toronto studio. The exhibition showcases a range of standalone projects that collectively reflect his

cohesive art practice. This collection of work will be on view to the community from

October 18, 2024, to November 18, 2024.

In this collection of recent works, Dennis Lin seeks to preserve remnants of a past that feels increasingly fragile. The body of work on view, all segments of developing series, are anchored in three primary materials: paper salvaged from his grandfather’s paper factory in Taiwan; incense sticks collected from Taiwanese temples; and charcoal from a house fire Lin suffered in 2021. Using these materials, Lin embarks in large-scale sculpture, reliefs, and hanging mobiles. Lin’s work stands as a testament to the urgency of preserving a culture facing threats of obsolescence and geopolitical pressures.

This body of work is equally concerned with the meticulous techniques of conservation and the emotional weight of hoarding – gathering, saving, and safeguarding what might otherwise be lost. Through reimagining these narratives, Lin ensures that the unique threads of his identity persevere against external forces threatening their erasure.

Please join us for an opening reception on October 18th, from 6 PM to 10 PM. Drinks and small plates courtesy of Chef Teo Paul will be served.

Dennis Lin is a Canadian-born artist of Taiwanese descent whose work engages themes of pattern, material nostalgia, and belonging. He has developed his practice through making processes that filter his technical skill into old-industry systems that have been trialed, stretched, and honed over a 20+ year long career. His work is in the collections at Sick Kids Hospital, Toronto; Aman Resorts, Tokyo; Four Seasons Hotel, New York; and Nobu, Toronto.
