Cape Dorset: An Inuit Art Legacy

A small Arctic settlement of 1,400, Cape Dorset is hailed as the most artistic community in Canada. Since the 1950s this tiny hamlet has been recognized for its exquisite and iconic drawings, prints and sculptures. Cape Dorset has sustained an international reputation for its creative industry and continues to develop an unparalleled Inuit art legacy. Cape Dorset's creators are exhibited and collected worldwide and have made Inuit art a quintessentially Canadian form of expression. From the West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative, William Huffman will introduce us to the history of this unique Inuit community and to the work of its many artists - including Kenojuak Ashevak, Tim Pitsiulak and Shuvinai Ashoona. Huffman will acquaint us with some of the factors that make Cape Dorset an unlikely cultural powerhouse while identifying some of the ongoing challenges that face artists working in the far North.
