POLISH VIOLINIST MAKES CANADIAN DEBUT AT SINFONIA TORONTO CONCERT
Sinfonia Toronto’s next concert on Friday, December 11, at 8 pm in Glenn Gould Studio will feature one of Poland’s foremost violinists Marta Magdalena Lelek. Ms. Lelek will be heard in Polish composer Andrzej Panufnik’s Violin Concerto, originally commissioned, premiered and recorded by Yehudi Menuhin. Music Director Nurhan Arman will conduct a program that includes Elgar’s Serenade and Beethoven’s Sinfonia his String Quartet No.2, arranged especially for this performance by Nurhan Arman.
Marta Magdalene Lelek has de¬scribed by re¬view¬ers as “s¬tun¬ning lis¬ten¬ers with breath¬tak¬ing tech¬nique,” “in¬ten¬se,” and “thrilling the au¬di¬ence with the most beau¬ti¬ful sound.” She began her studies at the age of nine at the Academy of Music in Katowice and continued her studies in London at the Guildhall School of Music. Ms. Lelek performs extensively as a soloist with major symphony and chamber orchestras throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, North and South America.
Her rich reper¬toire in¬cludes vi¬o¬lin con¬cer¬tos by Ben¬jamin Brit¬ten, William Wal¬ton, Ralph Vaugh¬an Williams, Al¬ban Berg, Igor Stravin¬sky, Samuel Bar¬ber, Fer¬ru¬cio Bu¬soni, Mario Castelnuovo-T¬edesco, Carl Nielsen, Yev¬gen Stankovych, An¬drzej Panufnik and David Tu¬ki¬ci. Karl Fior¬i¬ni wrote for and dedicated to her his Violin Concerto No. 2 which Ms. Lelek has recorded it for the Nax¬os label.
Nurhan Arman has conducted throughout Europe, Asia, South America, Canada and the United States, returning regularly to many orchestras in Europe. Among the orchestras Maestro Arman has conducted are the Moscow Philharmonic, Deutsches Kammerorchester Frankfurt, Filarmonica Italiana, St. Petersburg State Hermitage Orchestra, Orchestre Regional d’Ile de France, Hungarian Symphony, Milano Classica and Belgrade Philharmonic. During the 2014-15 season he will conduct in Italy, Austria, Poland and Mexico.
Now in its 17th season, Sinfonia Toronto has toured in United States and twice in Europe, receiving glowing reviews. It has released four CD’s, including a JUNO Award winner, and performs in many Ontario cities. Its extensive repertoire includes all the major string orchestra works of the 18th through 21st centuries, and it has premiered many new works. Under the baton of Nurhan Arman the orchestra’s performances present outstanding international guest artists and prominent Canadian musicians.
