Black History Month at TIFF Bell Lightbox
Throughout the month of February, join TIFF in celebrating Black excellence in film, featuring the 30th-anniversary restoration of Spike Lee’s Malcolm X, starting on February 17; the 25th-anniversary restoration of Hype Williams’ Belly; a 1990s Black cinema retrospective, and special events at TIFF Bell Lightbox.
Audiences are also invited to visit TIFF’s public spaces for installations and events including a live painting by Curtia Wright in the TIFF Bell Lightbox Atrium between February 1 and 6. Wright’s mural, Milk n Honey, will be on view throughout the February and is presented in partnership with StreetARToronto.
Perpetratin’ Realism: 1990s Black Film – February 2–24
TIFF Cinematheque is presenting a retrospective of New Black Realism from the 1990s featuring pre-recorded and in-person introductions by Kardinal Offishall with a series of associated events. Curated by the American Cinematheque, Perpetratin’ Realism: 1990s Black Film examines how films navigated complex and often contradictory representations of Black life, love, and friendship.
