Between Life and Light: 45th Anniversary Photography Show

This exhibition features many contemporary women artists who paved the way - Barbara Astman, Sarah Moon, Sheila Metzner, Sarah Charlesworth, Carol Marino, Michelle Forsyth, Sondra Meszaros, Grit Schwertfeger, and the modernist artists from whom they derived inspiration - Claude Cahun, Sophie Tauber Arp, Lucia Moholy, Barbara Morgan, Lisette Model, Diane Arbus.

Artists whose work exemplifies who we are. Robert Mapplethorpe, Herb Ritts, Claude Cahun, Lori Newdick, Ruth Bernhard, and George Platt Lynes define identity politics and take up subjects exploring queerness and the gaze on nude bodies.

From early French and Italian modernists and collage makers, Andre Kertesz, George Hugnet, to the depression era photojournalists - Dorothea Lange, the show has the most exciting examples of the great photographs who defined the history of the medium.

Fashion icons - Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Horst - created the exciting new American Magazine world from the second half of the 20th century onward.

Early 20th century work by Germaine Krull and Andre Kertesz inform the works of contemporary photographers- Thaddeus Holownia, Frank Madler, Michelle Forsyth, and Grit Schwerdtfeger - whose works allow us to understand that photography continues its exciting presence on the art landscape.

Between Life and Light is on view through March 31 2025.
