Artist Talk w/ Brian Donnelly
Brian Donnelly is a mixed-media artist. His process is layered: it begins with a fully finished painting, ending in a dismantled version of the original piece. Over the years, he has deconstructed his own pieces often through melting with solvent. He is known for the deconstruction of his vividly colourful portraits. On April 22nd, Donnelly will be discussing his unique process, the presence of feminism in his newest pieces, and the relation of historic figures present in 'Original Copy.'
Donnelly’s show 'Original Copy' focuses on mechanical reproduction and its effect on image perception. Part of an ongoing exploration of artistic paradox, Donnelly questions notions of authenticity, and the possibility that absence and presence are interchangeable concepts, specifically through various manipulations of his original oil-on-canvas paintings.
Donnelly has been exhibiting globally for over ten years, with work featured in galleries in France, Australia, Luxembourg, and dozens of cities across North America. Donnelly’s work has been published in Juxtapoz Magazine, as well as Magenta Foundation’s Carte Blanche Vol. 2 alongside two hundred of Canada’s best and most promising artists.
