CANADIAN PREMIERE SCREENING: THE PENALTY – TORONTO CITIES FOR LIFE 2018
Join us to celebrate Toronto's 12th annual Cities For Life: Cities Against the Death Penalty event. Each year, on or about 30 November, cities around the world (now numbering over 2,000 cities), hold events, illuminate monuments or structures and stand together against the death penalty.
Each year since 2007, Toronto has held events with speakers and performers to mark the occasion. The event is organised by Amnesty International Amnesty International's University of Toronto Club and the Amnesty International Toronto Organisation. This year the event will be the Canadian premiere screening of The Penalty.
From the makers of the film:
The Penalty follows three people caught in the crosshairs of capital punishment and the political landscape that could decide their fate.
Going behind the scenes of some of the biggest headlines in the history of America’s death penalty, the film follows the lethal injection protocol crisis that resulted in a botched execution; the rehabilitation of a man who spent 15 years on death row for a crime he didn’t commit, and the family of a young woman – brutally murdered – split by the state’s pursuit of the ultimate punishment.
Following the film will be a panel discussion hosted by James Lockyer, founding director of Innocence Canada (formerly AIDWYC), filmmaker Will Francome, State Representative Renny Cushing, the founder and Executive Director of Murder Victims’ Families for Human Rights, and Hamid Ghassemi-Shall, Iranian-Canadian who spent five years in Iran’s Evin prison including on death row on false charges of espionage.
