Shot on 16mm in the late 90s, american movie chronicles 2 years in the life of wisconsin-based filmmaker and dreamer mark borchardt as he attempts to make the short horror feature coven with the help of his friends, family, and other locals - most notably mike schenk, who bonds with mark over being the most reliable member of the crew (and often the only one to show up on any given shooting-day. ) as an independent documentary shot on film about an independent horror movie shot on film, american movie and its 1999 release-year perfectly captured the end-of-the-centurys oft-purported last gasp of diy 16mm cinema, before easy availability of digital cameras changed the landscape forever. American movie and mark borchardts journey within have become timeless and oft-discussed cult classics, and the documentary lives on as one of the most endearing and beloved films ever made about the spirit of independent cinema. -- @theymghtbemovies
