Albert Jackson Plaque Presentation

Heritage Toronto and the Jackson family invite you to the unveiling of a historical plaque for Albert Jackson, the first Black letter carrier in Toronto and a key figure in the struggle against racism in Canada.

Albert Jackson was born into slavery in Delaware. After arriving in Toronto via the Underground Railroad, he was hired as a letter carrier in Toronto, but was blocked from entering the role because of his race. After an outcry that involved Prime Minister John A Macdonald, Jackson was instated, becoming the first Black letter carrier in the city and one of the few people of colour to be appointed a civil servant in 19th-century Canada.

An informal reception hosted by Dream Office REIT will follow the plaque unveiling.

*Admission is free but we appreciate your RSVP
