A Greener Future: The Butt Blitz

After doing hundreds of cleanups along the shores of Lake Ontario during Love Your Lake, it became clear that we have a BIG cigarette litter problem. Cigarette butts account for over 82% of all the litter we find at our cleanups.

In 2015, we ran our first ever Butt Blitz — an action-oriented campaign focused on raising public awareness about cigarette litter, while simultaneously removing as much of it from the environment as possible. During the Butt Blitz, volunteers from across Canada pick up cigarette butts in their local communities, then send them to TerraCycle Canada for recycling. We hope to prevent future littering by raising awareness of the negative impacts that cigarette butt litter has on ecosystems and health.

Cigarette butts are the most common litter item found worldwide. To date, A Greener Future has picked up more than 2.1 million cigarette butts, and we’re not stopping there. Throughout September, we’ll be hosting a month-long Butt Blitz campaign with the goal of picking up 1 million cigarette butts from across Canada.

September 1st - 30th, 2021

All volunteers must be aged 19+ to participate

Throughout the month of September, volunteers will pick up cigarette butts from their local community. Our goal is to collectively remove 1 million cigarette butts from the environment by the end of September.

All collected cigarette butts will be sent to Terracycle for recycling at the end of the campaign.
