Toronto bar known for its craft beers and iconic rooftop patio to close for good after a decade

A Toronto bar known for its unrivalled craft beer selection and stellar rooftop patio that was a must-visit during the summer months has announced its sudden closure, which is approaching just a matter of days.

This weekend will be the last for Bar Hop Brewco on Peter Street, which has been serving up dozens of beers on tap — alongside bottles, cans and a trendy list of scrumptious snacks to share — for nearly an entire decade, since fall 2015.

The popular spot opened as the more expansive second location of the original Bar Hop that lives just a few blocks south at King and Spadina, and was complete with a microbrewery and multiple floors of space.

Its large rooftop patio was a boon in the summertime and one of the best in Toronto, sun-drenched, almost always bustling and full of the best warm-weather vibes, with views on all sides of the city three floors below.

Rumours of the sale of the business and the potential forthcoming closure of the iconic spot leaked in mid-December. Management staff on-site confirmed as much to blogTO at the time, saying that they would likely be shutting their doors permanently between the final days of 2024 and mid-January 2025.

Meanwhile, the listing agent for the business — which had been up for $299,000 since late summer — wanted things to stay under wraps until the sale was more firm, saying even in early January that the team was still awaiting final approvals for the conditional buyer.

But, Bar Hop broke the news on social media Monday evening that the Peter Street mainstay would unfortunately be closing down in the days to come.

Owners shared that January 18 would be the spot's final date in operation, a decision made with "mixed emotions" following the crippling forced closures of the COVID years.

"Since the onset of the pandemic, which changed many of our lives and behaviours, we have been hopeful to see things return to the good ole' days. The last four years have been difficult with a slow recovery in the downtown area, increased costs and the feeling by most people that there is a lot less to go around," reads the most recent post on Bar Hop's Instagram.

"We were optimistic that we could keep providing Bar Hop's brand of good times from multiple locations, however we realized that sometimes good things must come to an end. We want to thank all of our customers, staff and business partners that have supported this location over the past 10 years. We have created many memories together and we are grateful for each one of them. We will miss this special place."

The update added that the original Bar Hop at 391 King Street West will remain open, and that staff "look forward to keep serving up all the great things you know and love."

Patrons can celebrate the end of an era for the other Bar Hop Brewco at 137 Peter Street between Wednesday and Saturday.
