Here's how grocery prices in Italy compare to Canada right now
The rate of inflation on goods and services in Canada may be easing up, but the nation's ludicrous cost of living is still an issue as residents in cities like Toronto struggle with immense unaffordability for many goods and services.
The drastic price hikes we've seen in recent years for groceries in particular remains a hot topic — which is why during a trip to Italy last month, I was very interested in checking out the difference in food costs between the two countries.
With a handful of cash at an exchange rate of around $1.50 CAD per Euro, I went into a Conad store in Rome to suss out what residents of the capital city are paying for basic staples. The chain has the largest supermarket presence in the country, with around 3,400 locations.
Here's what I found, and how Conad's prices measure up to Walmart Canada's, though it must be noted that not all products are exact matches, only comparables:

Lastly, there was wine available on the shelves of Conad for as low as €2.85 ($4.23 CAD) a bottle.
Despite the fact that Walmart Canada does not have alcohol pricing online, it goes without saying that the product is significantly more expensive here — even Walmart's de-alcoholized wine goes for around double Conad's price for the alcoholic version.
