People behind Toronto Picklefest are on a mission to get an official pickle emoji
The Toronto business that's behind the biggest pickle festival in Canada is fed up with there being no pickle emoji — and they've launched a petition to change that.
"For many of us, pickles constitute an irreplaceable part of our identity and culture. They resonate with nostalgic memories and invoke a deep sense of happiness," reads the description of a Change.org campaign launched by Toronto craft brewery, Henderson.
"However, unfortunately, the emoji landscape today does not reflect this love for pickles."
Since 2023, Henderson has been the home base for Picklefest, a weekend-long festival packed with all things briny, green and delicious, from pickle-based dishes to pickle juice cocktails, and are gearing up for the second installation of the festival this October.
So, obviously, Henderson has a vested interest in the addition of a pickle emoji — if not just for ease of communications — but, Henderson's Director of Marketing, Matt Carson tells blogTO, the main inspiration behind the movement is a sheer love of pickles.
"It's shocking to me that there isn't a pickle emoji of any kind in the current emoji landscape. Not only are pickled foods a staple in just about every culture, but their popularity world-wide can't be ignored," Matt says.
"Pickle festivals around the globe draw thousands of die-hard pickle fans who show their love for all things pickled with their hard earned dollars. All we have to show our love for pickles is a sliced cucumber and an empty jar emoji? This simply can't stand!"
Not content to simply sit back and take this madness, Henderson decided to take matters into their own hands, launching the petition which, at the time of publication, has earned 68 signatures out of their goal of 100.
"The Unicode Consortium is responsible for the creation of new emojis, and they have a history of incorporating symbols that resonate with people's sentiments and diversity," the petition's description reads.
"For instance, in their last update, Unicode 13.0, they included 117 new emojis ranging from animals to musical instruments (Unicode, 2020). However, the pickle community still awaits representation in this expressive language."
If successful, it's not just a brand-spanking-new pickle emoji that Toronto pickle lovers will be getting — Matt tells blogTO that Henderson's got something big planned if they're successful in their pursuit.
"If we can successfully get a pickle jar emoji willed into existence by October 5th & 6th for Picklefest Food and Drink festival, we plan on sharing the excitement by creating a life-size pickle jar for the thousands of guests in attendance to enjoy," he says.
"That way everyone can get a photo of themselves and their friends 'getting pickled' to share with the world!"
If you'd like to join the fight to have a pickle jar created, you can sign their petition through Change.org, and visit Picklefest's website to celebrate pickles in all their glory.
