Toronto snowstorm has wreaked havoc on TTC with multiple streetcars derailed
It's been a messy night and morning for Toronto, with a potent blizzard rocking the city with double-digit centimetres of snow.
Public and Catholic schools are closed across the GTA, and some colleges and universities are operating in limited capacities (if at all) — heck, even the Toronto Zoo is taking a break from its 365-day-a-year schedule.
Even while the city's plows are out tackling the accumulation, roads are still slick, snow-covered and hazardous, and various authorities are thus recommending that people stay put if at all possible.
For residents who do have places to be, the City and the TTC have urged taking public transportation instead of driving. But, transit hasn't been all smooth sailing amidst the storm, either.
A total of 56 bus stops were taken out of service "until further notice due to weather" around 8 a.m. Thursday as the agency ramped up its winter weather operations, which include monitoring specific routes, and de-icing and salting tracks.
Still, it seems a couple of surface lines have been severely impacted.
A row of 504 King streetcars was seen halted along the tracks near Spadina around 10 a.m., with some diverting, though it is unclear if this was due to road conditions or a reported watermain break (or both).
Streetcars travelling westbound on College have also been stuck at a standstill around Lansdowne since 8:25 a.m. due to a derailment, with shuttle buses operating to High Park Loop in lieu.
A derailing incident also occurred along Dundas Street at Landsdowne, with no service westbound to Dundas West Station. Shuttle buses have also been dispatched for passengers on that line.
A bystander posted on Reddit about derailed streetcars along Dundas Street West around 10 a.m. Thursday.
Other service interruptions this morning include hiccups on the 54 Lawrence East and 954 Lawrence East Express, 37 Islington, 7 Bathurst, 64 Main, 503 Kingston Road, 38 Highland Creek, 169 Huntington, 133 Neilson, 131 Nugget and others due to weather conditions, blocked roads and/or track issues.
While the latter four have been resolved, others are still detouring. The 28 Bayview South has been completely suspended.
For commuters riding the GO, a number of GO train routes are operating on amended schedules to "allow trains to run as smoothly as possible while keeping them clear of snow and ice build-up," including the Milton, Kitchener, Stouffville and Lakeshore West lines. Certain GO buses are also facing delays and cancellations, detailed on GO Transit's website.
Many flights out of both Toronto Pearson International Airport and Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport have been delayed or cancelled since yesterday evening for those who had longer trips planned than just across the city.
More snow is also on the way, so be prepared for more slowdowns to come.
