Shampoo recalled across Canada after reports of 'foul odour'

Thousands of units of a shampoo brand are part of a major recall across Canada due to microbial contamination.

According to Health Canada, 95,000 units of amika shampoo were sold nationwide from May 2023 to November 2024. The products were manufactured by amika LLC in the US, where over 982,000 units of the affected shampoo are being recalled across 31 states, reports The Healthy.

The agency is urging people to stop using the recalled product immediately, stating that affected products could potentially be contaminated with Pluralibacter gergoviae. Although this might pose little medical risk to healthy individuals, it can increase the risk of infection for individuals with certain health problems or compromised immune systems.

As of January 27, 2025, amika has received 48 reports of foul odour in Canada and two reports of irritation or an allergic reaction.

"We have been monitoring recent feedback citing change in odour and, in rare cases, temporary irritation," reads a statement on the company's website

"There have been no reported serious adverse health events associated with using this product. We initiated this recall after determining that various production batches at our third-party manufacturing site do not meet our stringent quality standards due to the presence or potential presence of a bacterium called P. Gergoviae."
