Toronto storefront attacked with Molotov cocktails and locals are shocked

Toronto's Liberty Village neighbourhood is searching for answers after a local storefront was attacked with Molotov cocktails by a group of four masked suspects.

On Wednesday, Aug. 14, at approximately 3:45 a.m., police say they responded to a call for a fire in the East Liberty Street and Hanna Avenue area.

As shown in a surveillance video posted by police, three suspects are seen approaching a retail store and removing items from a bag. One of the suspects then smashes the storefront window with an object, after which all three suspects begin throwing Molotov cocktails at the store.

Police say an additional suspect was in the area on a bike, acting as a lookout.

The four suspects then fled the area, and fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

Police have released images of the four suspects, showing three wearing black hoodies, face masks, and gloves. The fourth suspect was last seen wearing a dark blue hoodie, black face mask, black pants, and a red gym bag. All four suspects are still at large.

News of the arson investigation quickly spread on social media and a community Facebook page, where local residents tried to figure out why the store was targeted.

"Thank God they didn't hit the animal hospital. Once in a while when I walk by, there's a cat sitting in the window, even at night. I always hope that somebody is working late there, and could help the sweet little thing if there was an emergency," one person wrote.

Others noted that the attack was bold, considering that there's a police station just a couple feet away.

"Explains all the sirens and chaos yesterday. … might be time to move," while another person said, "This city is literally becoming a dumpster fire."
