minion marathon toronto

Someone in Toronto just ran a full marathon in a Minions costume

A Toronto resident just ran a full marathon dressed as a Minion for a good cause.

Weird and wonderful things are happening in Toronto all the time — there's the guy who skateboards through the city dressed as Spiderman and calling himself 'Peter Parkour,' or the crossing guard who can be found dancing and blasting club beats at the corner of Queen and Shaw first thing in the morning.

It's for these reasons that, strangely enough, it might not seem entirely outside of the realm of possibility to catch someone decked out in an inflatable Minion costume leave you in his dust as he embarks on a lengthy run — but there's more to the story than a deep love of cardio and the babbling yellow creatures from Despicable Me.

On Tuesday, July 23, Toronto resident Tommy Trinh suited up in his banana yellow, oblong suit at 6 a.m. and embarked on his mission to run a full marathon to raise funds for the Parkdale Food Bank.

When the beating summer sun got nearly too hot to handle in the quasi-sauna costume, Tommy lost the suit, revealing yet another Minion costume underneath. If that's not commitment, I don't know what is.

This isn't the first time Tommy's embarked on a Minion Marathon to support the Parkdale Food Bank — earlier this month, he quickly raised thousands of dollars, and vowed to run a half marathon in the costume after reaching a $10,000 goal.

When donations began pouring in, he added additional incentives — promises like hand-delivering coffee to anyone who donated $100 or more or increasing the run's distance for every additional $1000 raised.

Come July 23, Tommy had raised $10k for the food bank — the final tier on his fundraising goals — for which he promised a full marathon run dressed as a Minion.

"I found that one in 10 Torontonians rely on food banks to feed themselves. That really hit me. I wanted to use my platform to help and make a change," Trinh told blogTO in an earlier interview.

Beyond raising funds for charity, though, Tommy's endeavour created something just as valuable, that everyone can benefit from: joy.
