Major cleanup underway after Evergreen Brick Works in Toronto damaged by flood

Evergreen Brick Works is deep into clean up efforts after getting utterly washed out amid widespread flooding in Toronto.

Locations all across the city have been in repair mode after a record-breaking almost 100 mm of rain fell on Toronto and the GTA July 16, and Evergreen Brick Works is among them.

After evacuating and closing the centre due to extreme flooding and cancelling all upcoming events until further notice, the event venue and nature reserve has provided an update on the current state of Evergreen Brick Works.

On July 17, Evergreen, the organization that founded the Brick Works, published aerial photos to Instagram showing the extreme extent of the flooding.

While it looks bad and, yeah, it is pretty bad, Evergreen does write in the caption that the area was designed specifically with flooding in mind.

"The Brick Works, located in a flood plain, is designed with flood resilience in mind, including features such as greenways, cisterns and permeable surfaces," they write.

"As extreme weather events, like flooding, become more frequent and severe, the importance of climate-resilient infrastructure for mitigating impact cannot be overstated," they add.

Evergreen says that, for anyone looking for ways to help, the best way to do so is to make a donation, which will go directly to flood recovery.

A later post also puts a call out for volunteers to register for clean-up events that are happening on Friday, July 19, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1 to 4:30 p.m., adding that "additional shifts may be added as required over the coming days!"

If you'd like to get involved, you can find all the resources necessary to either register for a clean up shift or donate through Evergreen's website.
