Crossroad Kafe
Crossroad Kafe takes its influences from around the world, which is fitting since this cafe also partially operates as the office for agency Travelling Chicken.
They serve coffee and brunch offerings all day every day, with a bit of elevation to the usual coffee shop presentation.
The space is a quirky clutter of design styles with varying options for seating, but give me free WiFi and window-facing seating and I'm sold. This cafe is also a quick walk from the best seating ever: the park.
Many baked goods here are homemade by Crossroad, like breakfast puff pockets, quiches, and sweet cornbread, other items provided by La Bastille.
Weekly specials pull from the backgrounds of staff, a mini open-faced sandwich with potato salad, ham, salami, egg, cheese and pickle inspired by the likes of those served in owner Lenka Macajova's native Czechoslovakia.
Local providers Fair Grounds and Rufino are used for all coffee beverages.
That includes turmeric lattes ($5.50) with a bright golden colour and potent earthy taste, all milk creamy Harmony Organic.
Bagel House bagels stacked with smoked salmon ($8.95) also have cream cheese blended with lemon zest and dill in house, as well as red onion, capers, and a fluffy heap of alfalfa sprouts.
They also do a fantastic Croque Madame here, $10.95 bundled into a lunch with soup. On a buttery, flaky La Bastille croissant, this sandwich has a rich, addictive bechamel sauce made with blue cheese and onions as well as ham, salami and a fried egg.
Avocado bread ($7.95) uses Prairie Boy for the foundation, topped with a boiled egg, fresh tomato and blueberries, dried cranberries, radish, alfalfa, cilantro and a balsamic vinaigrette.
With the addition of fresh fruit, there's a lot going on here, but it's certainly all pretty healthy if you're the sort that likes the full rainbow on their plate.
They use Genuine Tea for all teas, and you can optionally get them iced, just as pretty as any of the pulled drinks here.
Matcha lattes ($5.50) can also be iced, that full flavoured harmony milk combining really well with Genuine's Kato matcha.
They also use fair ground beans, which are available to purchase from the cafe by the bag.
Feel-good easy listening music plays the whole time I'm here, and a scratch-off map in the basement shows off where customers are from.
