Chaplus
Chaplus is a bubble tea cafe located in Scarborough's Sky City Plaza that serves up wildly unique takes on this popular beverage.
In contrast with many of the other bubble tea places in the city, Chaplus is 100 per cent Toronto-based and not affiliated with any foreign chain.
The main draw here is the new whisky-flavoured non-alcoholic beverages. The Whisky Matcha Chocolate Slush ($6.50) is a good option for those unsure about the whisky flavouring, as the matcha and chocolate flavours take centre stage here, with only a very subtle whisky aftertaste.
Those who prefer a bolder whisky taste should go straight for the Whisky Cranberry Orange Green Tea ($6.50). With cranberry and orange juices mixed with the whisky-flavoured syrup, it really reminds me of a fruity cocktail.
The crazy drinks don't stop there. The Lychee Dragon Fruit Slush ($6.50) is a visually striking drink containing dragonfruit, lychee syrup, and aloe. Definitely perfect for the 'gram.
My personal favourite is the Gold Flake Black Truffle Oolong Milk Cap ($6.70) which features actual gold flakes and real black truffle powder layered on top of an extremely delicious milk cap foam that I could eat all day.
It's not all about tea here, as the Black Truffle Iced Coffee ($5.80) shows. Admittedly, the black truffle flavour is a bit too subtle for me, but the sweet iced coffee hits the right spot, especially if it's warm out.
Toronto has seen its fair share of brown sugar milk drinks, but none are as wild as the Brown Sugar Milk Strawberry ($6.50) here, which adds strawberry juice to the traditional brown sugar milk concoction.
The result is a surprisingly pleasant beverage which reminds me of the strawberry milk drinks I had as a child.
The slightly over-the-top Strawberry Nutella Waffle ($6.20) is a great complement to many of Chaplus' unique drinks. It comes with slices of real strawberries, whipped cream, and a generous drizzling of Nutella.
Something a bit more basic is the Corn and Seaweed Waffle ($5.50) which sounds odd but is rather delicious.
