Overpressure Club

Overpressure Club near Bloor and Ossington is the latest offering from Alfred Siu, owner of the much-loved cocktail bar Project Gigglewater.

It's already a hit in the neighbourhood and is proving itself to be an incredible new addition to the Toronto bar scene.

This spot specializes in cocktails on tap that are gorgeously paired with Japanese-inspired small plates. Part of what makes Overpressure Club unique is the sheer amount of cocktails they have on draft.

overpressure club torontoThey are the first bar in the city to have so many offerings on tap, especially with such variety. The process is no small feat - each cocktail has to be strained, clarified, and carbonated to accomplish the quality they serve.

The location, formerly home to Northwood, has been transformed with chic design and ambient lighting that perfectly sets the tone for the food and drink you'll indulge in.

overpressure club torontoIts chill but elevated ambience makes it ideal for a date night, or as a meeting spot for friends on any night of the week when you want to indulge in quality food and drinks.

The bar manager, Sasha Siegel, has outdone himself with the cocktail menu, full of complex and thoughtfully crafted drinks you won't find anywhere else in the city. The aim of Overpressure Club is for "...people to be able to drink serious cocktails in a less serious environment."

overpressure club torontoWhen creating the drink menu, which took approximately three months, Siegel leaned into the Japanese ingredients wherever he could to best pair the drinks with the planned menu. The drinks themselves are minimalistic in style, but that is no reflection of the flavours.

overpressure clubSiegel's goal was to have a versatile menu that could challenge people while remaining accessible. The range of style and flavour profiles in the drinks is immense - but it's not just for those who consume alcohol. The menu also includes thoughtfully crafted mocktails on tap.

overpressure club torontoAmong the signature cocktails are the Peach Punks ($17), a blend of bourbon, peach aperitif, benedictine, blackened lemon cordial, and bay leaf soda served in a glass coated with "corn pop dust".

The rimmer is actually macerated lemon rind that is soaked in sugar to make the lemon syrup they use in-house, an effort toward being more sustainable with their ingredients. It also happens to taste and smell just like corn pops.

overpressure club torontoThe Queen of Hearts ($17) is a fun and tasty milk punch that goes down easy and is served with a tasty and delicate white chocolate raspberry biscuit on top of an ice cube. It looks shockingly like an egg-white cocktail, despite it being poured on tap.

overpressure club torontoYou may have seen the eye-catching Tropic Pursuit ($19) on Instagram, a refreshing tequila cocktail topped with a signature mango blue gel.

overpressure club torontoAnother beautiful offering is the Branca Bouquet ($18), a blend of fernet, amaro, blueberry, lemon, and jasmine soda. The essence of the flowers that garnish it comes through, adding to the sensory experience of the drink.

overpressure club torontoThe Pandan-o-rama ($18) is a unique blend of indulgent flavours similar to eggnog with a strong kick of sake.

The small plates on offer are as varied and elegant as the cocktail menu, with options that range from $6 to $26 and include something for everyone, with a variety of vegetarian and vegan options available.

overpressure club torontoAmong the carnivorous options are a shrimp cocktail ($20) that features massive tiger shrimp accompanied by a yuzu cocktail sauce with leek oil, as well as a tender short-rib steak ($26) coated in a honey miso glaze.

overpressure club torontoIf you're looking for some veg-friendly options, try the refreshing cucumber salad ($8), dressed in sesame oil and pickled chili, or the oyster mushrooms ($16), which are lightly fried to perfection and served on a nori glaze and sake kasu beurre mote.

overpressure club torontoThe loaded fries ($11) come coated in curry sauce and cheese curds and are delightfully reminiscent of poutine.

overpressure club torontoThe tofupokki ($8) packs a serious punch, coated in gochujang, garlic, and scallions. It does have a decent amount of heat, so consider pairing this with one of the milk punch cocktails.

overpressure club torontoIn an effort to make the bar more accessible, Overpressure Club offers a happy hour 7 days a week from 5 to 7 p.m. At this time, they serve up special takes on classic cocktails for $12 and offer a $6 small bite.

The night I visited, the features were a spin on a gimlet and an espresso martini. Both were delicious and expertly crafted.

overpressure club torontoThey also offer a long list of Japanese whisky highballs ranging from $16 to $125, a handful of sake's, wines and a Japanese rice lager from Rorschach.
