Miss Ivy
Miss Ivy is a classy little cocktail bar with an entirely green colour palette.
Founded by a team of experienced nightclub owners, Miss Ivy was created with the intention of bringing an elevated, "King Street-esque" experience to Queen West.
The dining room is a small, intimate space that can comfortably seat up to forty diners. The walls are lined with framed portraits, which combine elements of modern photography with recognizable paintings from the Italian Renaissance.
A long bar dominates much of the eastern wall. The shelves behind the bar are covered with artificial greenery, reinforcing the restaurant's ivy motif.
Overall, the decor strikes the right balance between posh and playful. The staff tells me that their goal was to create an appealing venue for a wide variety of events, from corporate dinners to casual meetups.
Miss Ivy's menu takes inspiration from East Asian cuisine, with Japanese and Korean dishes having the strongest influence over their ingredients and presentation.
Cucumber Salad ($12) is made with pickled cucumbers and kimchi amazu. Traditional Japanese vinegar is used to enhance the tangy taste of the fermented vegetables.Watermelon Feta Salad ($16) combines juicy watermelon slices and crumbly feta cheese with baby arugula, sliced cucumbers and a citrus soy dressing, resulting in a dish that is equal parts sweet and savoury.Salmon Tataki ($24) is lightly seared and marinated in lime miso, with pickled red onion and wasabi giving the tender meat a slightly spicy aftertaste. Wagyu Beef Tacos ($22) are a twist on a classic Mexican dish. These tacos forego familiar toppings like salsa and guacamole in favour of galbi sauce, micro cilantro and aji panca aioli.Rock Shrimp ($20) is a simple yet effective dish, glazed with onion and sriracha ranch and topped with crunchy rainbow arare.Ivy Gardens ($18) is Miss Ivy's signature cocktail, made from Pisco, Licor 43, peach juice and lemon juice. The final touch is a dash of egg white, which gives the drink a frothy texture and a rich, creamy finish. Ocean Sounds ($18) tastes a bit like a spicy margarita, thanks to a potent mixture of Thai chile-infused tequila, Cicchetto Amaro, raspberry, ginger and acid-adjusted pineapple.Bubbles on a Jet ($17) is my favourite drink here. This bright pink cocktail is lighter than many of the other drinks and contains gin, prosecco, raspberry and lemon juice. The Chai Tai ($18) is Miss Ivy's take on a mai tai. Served in a glass tiki mug and garnished with a lime wheel, this cocktail makes use of dark rum, Amaro Nonino, Amaretto and double spice chai, as well as pineapple and lime juice. Miss Ivy is located at 502 Queen Street West.
