Arts Etobicoke Makes Art Their Occupation
Artists running an art council: it may seem obvious to you and me, but in reality, the bureaucracy doesn't always reflect the constituents. Which is why it's comforting to know that the staff of Arts Etobicoke are not only artists in their own right, but also artists that are actively working in their respective communities to bring art education to the people of Toronto.
For the next three months, the Arts Etobicoke Gallery will be featuring a selection of artwork, publications, and performances by Arts Etobicoke staff members in a show entitled occupation: art. I had the pleasure of attending the opening reception of the show this past Thursday evening and learn about the art council that makes art its occupation.
A good number of members of the community came out for the show, where they were treated to a fantastic display of paintings, art installations, pieces of writing, graphic design, and of course, some very exciting performances.
A highlight for me during the evening was when Ruth Cumberbatch, musician and music teacher, invited two of her students â six-year-old Andre and eight-year-old Will â to perform along with her for the crowd.
Arts Etobicoke Executive Director Louise Garfield brought the house down with her fantastic lip-synch piece: a visit from the Old Philosopher. The evening also included some great group games and activities.
In all, everyone had a great time and it was refreshing to see that Arts Etobicoke was in the capable hands of people who held such a vibrant passion for the arts themselves.
occupation: art runs from June 7 to September 13 at the Arts Etobicoke Gallery, 4893A Dundas Street West. For more information, visit the Arts Etobicoke website.
