Candlelight Walk for Quebec City
Residents in the Coxwell Gerrard area will hold a candlelight walk and vigil tonight encircling the Indian Bazaar to honour the victims of the mass shooting in Quebec City. They will meet at 7:45 pm at the corner of Highfield Road and Gerrard Street East and walk through the Indian Bazaar to the Fatih Mosque at 182 Rhodes Avenue for a moment of silence and prayer. Then the walk will continue east on the south side of Gerrard to Coxwell and back along the north side of Gerrard to Highfield and Gerrard, ending at approximately 9 pm.
"The mass shooting in Quebec is both horrifying and heartbreaking. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and all Muslims. As a community we must stand together and defend every Canadians right to prayer and embrace an open, welcoming and peaceful society,” said Nina Beveridge, Producer and Director of “Village of Dreams”, a new documentary about Toronto’s Indian Bazaar to be aired later this summer on TVO.
One of the organizers, Leslieville historian, Joanne Doucette, said: “We need to express our sorrow and love for our neighbours and friends. Our Canada includes Muslims. Islamophobia is not the way and that this violence must stop.”
Participants will be encouraged to speak out against hatred towards Muslims whenever and wherever they see it and to donate to the Islamic Cultural Center of Quebec, the target of the attack.
