Set in 1961, the film follows a week in the life of a young singer as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene. It inspired by the cultural disconnection within a New York–based music scene where the songs seemed to come from all parts of the United States except New York, but whose performers included Brooklyn-born Dave Van Ronk and Ramblin' Jack Elliott. One source for the film was Van Ronk's posthumously published (2005) memoir, "The Mayor of MacDougal Street". According to the book's co-author, Elijah Wald, the Coens mined the work "for local color and a few scenes."
Come and experience the music and the magic of "Inside Llewyn Davis" with an all-star cast, including Oscar Isaac, Carey Muligan, John Goodman and Justin Timberlake!

String theories for new music, DIY electronics and prog rock
Featuring the Strange Strings Ensemble:
Ilana Waniuk (violin),

Margaret Ashburner — Violin Duo

Mike Smith — Famous Wildlife Movies I
Anthony Wallace — Resin Percussion String Quartet
The Music Gallery's Emergents series is Exhibit A in showcasing one of Toronto's most overlooked music scenes: the burgeoning community of young contemporary classical musicians. Ensembles like Spectrum, Toy Piano Composers and Thin Edge New Music Collective are putting on events with a fresh, indie-minded flavour featuring new works by local composers in highly original settings. This community interfaces with a wide variety of rock, jazz and world music projects throughout the city, country and beyond.
You’ve seen Mika Posen at the Music Gallery in shows with Lisa Bozikovic and Snowblink, elsewhere she’s known for being a member of Timber Timbre and Forest City Lovers.
Posen has subtitled Emergents I “Strange Strings”, in homage to Sun Ra’s 1967 album featuring the textures and timbres of stringed instruments. Here, stringed instruments are the foundation, while genre, style, and additional instrumentation will be left in the hands of three featured composers.
Beyond the use of strings, what unifies this evening’s entertainment is the willingness of musicians and composers to set aside individual artistic identity in order to put on a crazy diverse show.
The Strange Strings Ensemble of is a versatile group of string players who are active not only in the classical realm, but in the world of New Music (The Thin Edge Collective) and in large-scale pop projects (The Big Sound, Classic Albums Live). Ali Berkok (piano) guests on Mike Smith’s Quintet.
Multi-instrumentalist and composer Mike Smith’s (Toronto) work explores the interstices between folk music, progressive rock, jazz, and minimalism. Initially trained as a jazz bassist at the University of Toronto, Smith’s omnivorous practice is reflected in his output as leader of Muskox from 2007 to 2012. Smith is also a big part of some of Toronto's most eclectic artists: he works regularly with Sandro Perri and Eucalyptus. These pieces are his first compositions for string quartet.
Margaret Ashburner (Ottawa) studied composition at Wilfrid Laurier University and at the University of Victoria. Composer, violinist, and sound artist Anthony Wallace has written music for film, TV, theatre, and dance. He studied composition at York University and maintains a keen interest in creating works that involve multidisciplinary collaboration, multimedia approaches, and audience participation.
THE EMERGENTS SERIES IS GENEROUSLY SUPPORTED BY ROGER D. MOORE.
They were monumental homes to the gods more than 2000 years ago. Though stark and skeletal today, Egypt’s ancient temples were once garishly painted, guarded by colossal statues and entirely covered ceiling to floor with magnificent drawings of strange deities, blood curdling battles and epic sea journeys. But how were they laid out, who worshipped there – and what did the ancient Egyptians really believe?
This vibrant three hour evening lecture and learning immersion will transport you back in time to learn a complete overview of the great temples of Egypt. Travel with us down the the Nile to discover the worship practices, symbolism, cosmology and harken to the hidden secrets behind Queen Hatshepsut’s great mortuary temple, the Ptolomaic Temple of Horus at Edfu in Upper Egypt and much more...
Also... find out what archaeologists today are doing to restore and preserve these great wonders for a future generation – despite the daunting challenges of modern Egypt.

“I started by painting everything pink. I am pink on the outside and pink on the inside, so this is a very special colour.”
Lisa Brown was a Toronto-born, Paris and Berlin-based artist who passed away from cancer in 2001, at the age of 31. Working in the frenetic creative atmosphere of Berlin in the late 90s, Lisa’s signature drawing and painting style blends Modernist, Pop and street art influences with her own whimsical outlook and symbolism. In her short life, her insatiable appetite to create produced a prolific body of work, including a mural on the Berlin wall.
I’m No Wallflower: A Lisa Brown Retrospective is a celebration of Lisa’s life and work, and aims to evoke the vitality and creativity that defined the artist herself. This multimedia exhibition showcases over forty of the artist’s original pieces, many of which have not been seen publicly in over a decade. The exhibition coincides with the release of the book J’ai Revé Quelque Chose Hier: The Art of Lisa Brown. Hardcover copies, original artwork and reproductions will be for sale, with a 10% of all proceeds donated to Bridgepoint Active Heathcare.
Please join us for music and refreshments at the opening reception on Thursday, December 12th, 7-10 pm on the 2nd floor of the Gladstone Hotel, with DJ Dave Setrakian.

In conjunction the Prefix Institute of Contemporary Art, this salon will feature a selection of texts compiled by Gabrielle Moser and Jacob Korczynski.
Gabrielle Moser and Jacob Korczynski in attendance.
For the last year, Gabrielle Moser has been hosting a series of events titled No Looking After the Internet that invites participants to look at a photograph (or series of photographs) they are unfamiliar with, and “read” the image out-loud together. For the past few years, Jacob Korcynski has been hosting reading groups around Toronto based on the research thematics of If I Can't Dance, I Don't Want to Be Part of Your Revolution (IICD), including extended research around reading/feeling and appropriation/dedication. What No Reading After the Internet shares with No Looking and IICD is an interest in how we construct understanding based on encounter, be it with text or images. For this salon, Moser and Korczynski have selected texts that approach images through language, using prose to conjure scenes in the minds of readers that are already mediated, as representations rather than reality.
For this meeting, texts will include selections from Sergio González Rodríguez’s "The Femicide Machine" and Gauri Gill’s "1984."
GABRIELLE MOSER is a writer and independent curator. She regularly contributes to Artforum.com, and her writing has appeared in venues including ARTnews, Canadian Art, Fillip, n paradoxa, and Photography & Culture. She has curated exhibitions for Access Gallery, Gallery TPW, the Leona Drive Project and Vtape. Moser is a PhD candidate in art history and visual culture at York University and a member of the Toronto Photography Seminar.
JACOB KORCZYNSKI is an independent curator. A recent participant in the de Appel Curatorial Programme, he has curated projects for the Dunlop Art Gallery, SAVAC, Oakville Galleries, and the Stedelijk Museum. His writing has appeared in Prefix Photo, C Magazine, Fillip and is forthcoming in The Power Plant publication Jimmy Robert: Draw the Line (in collaboration with Oliver Husain). Currently, he is a researcher for the Performance in Residence platform of If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want to Be Part of Your Revolution.
This meeting of No Reading After the Internet (Toronto) is supported by the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (as always) and the Prefix Institute of Contemporary Art.

In the following winter months, Whippersnapper is excited to present Sidewalk Screening. The video exhibition series features 26 emerging artists from across Canada. Representing a broad range of styles and subject matter, this collage of emergent voices creates an aesthetic conversation for a diverse audience. The series is intended to provide a visual reprieve from the dark winter landscape of the city. By being projected onto the surface of the gallery windows these video works interact with the audience outside gallery by filling the streetscape with animated shorts. Speakers installed outside the gallery allow viewers to experience an aesthetic intervention in the visual and auditory landscape of the everyday.
