2015 TD Then & Now presents Kuumba
This year, Kuumba marks its twentieth anniversary showcasing emerging and innovative artists of African and Caribbean heritage in celebration of Black History Month. To mark this momentous juncture, as we look back over two decades and ahead many more, Kuumba 2015 explores contemporary Afro-Canadian culture via the theme of Afrofuturism.
Afrofuturism is a lens through which a range of artists, writers and thinkers since the late 1960s have been looking into the future, employing an Afrocentric and alternative view of the possibilities, mindful of the lessons and traditions of the past. Kuumba, the Swahili word for “creativity,” once again provides a platform for emerging and innovative comedians, dancers, musicians, filmmakers and others who will help define for their contemporaries and successors possible futures.
