Sweet Note Desserts
Sweet Note Desserts may be the only place in Markham where one can feast on a proper soufflé. This bakery is taking French desserts and turning them on their heads by using traditional Chinese flavours.
The menu here is short and sweet (pun fully intended). Rotating selections include few macaron flavours, a cake of the day, their signature milk bottles filled with a panna cotta like substance (flavours include mango coconut and rose lychee) and a few cupcakes. Soufflé, Baked Alaska, and Matcha Crème Brulee are a mainstay.
The impetus for my visit is to sample their highly praised soufflé ($8.75) a unique item to order in this casual setting. I opt for the chocolate with guava sauce. The soufflé is a perfect size for sharing. It's light and airy on the inside with a perfectly crisp cake like outside. The chocolate flavours are subtle and not too decadent.
The guava sauce to accompany the soufflé is quite interesting. It's very tart, almost to the point of being sour. The sauce did have a slight artificial flavour but was enjoyable non-the-less. The guava would probably pair better with vanilla, but it does speak to the unique flavours this bakery is showcasing.
In addition to the soufflé, I sample one of their exotic flavours of macarons ($2.50). The black sesame macaron is the perfect fusion of Chinese flavours into a French dessert. It has an intense nutty flavour that is less sweet than a traditional macaron. The filling is very creamy, although the meringue is a bit too hard for my liking.
To accompany their dessert menu they are also offering a small selection of teas and coffee beverages. This selection is barebones and unspectacular although a green tea or floral tea pairs well with the flavours on offer.
The décor here is simple and charming. Powder blue accents complement the white tables, while exposed brick adds warmth. The place is tiny with a few tables for small groups. Some of their selections (particularly the soufflé) are made to order so calling ahead to order will save you a long wait.
Sweet Note is definitely a unique concept that's bringing a much welcomed new look to Chinese desserts. It is no surprise that this place is bustling on most evenings.
