Marquis of Granby

Marquis of Granby pub opening soon in old Barn space

Village staple The Barn closed for good last summer after 20 years in business, and now, rising from the club's ashes, is the Marquis of Granby. The Marquis, at the corner of Church and Granby, will be a multi-purpose venue of sorts, but distinctly not a nightclub like its predecessor.

Manager Chris Karachalios says the Marquis will likely open by the end of next week. The first floor will be a pub, with a 25-item menu featuring typical pub food options like nachos, burgers and wings. Karachalios says there will be half-price and two-for-one student specials, too. And the top two floors will be available as rental venues for private events.

But despite the fact that the new venue is a two-spirited space, he says not everyone is happy about its restructuring. It can be hard to watch your neighbourhood change, and Karachalios says people were sad to see the cowboys on the side of the building painted over. (He adds that city bylaws were never in favour of the cowboys from the get-go, just FYI).

In any case, The Barn wasn't making money as a nightclub, and Karachalios says he and his team are looking to run a venue that will do better.
