Warung Indonesia d'Eglinton
Warung Indonesia d'Eglinton serves up traditional Indonesian dishes near Yonge and Eglinton. Inside, dark-washed walls and small Indonesia decorations of wayang figures are juxtaposed against a wall art depicting Toronto's neighbourhoods.
Indonesian cuisine's stunning diversity can be a bit overwhelming so the Fried Potato Patties ($5.95) are a great way to start. A cross between a perogy and a croquette, deep fried until golden brown, it's a bit heavy, but satisfying.
Follow that up with some of Chicken Satay ($6.95), arguably the iconic dish of Indonesia, which is grilled tender dark meat chicken spiced with a special sauce mixing peanuts, shallot, and garlic.
The Eggs in Bali Sauce ($6.95) is a traditional dish where the egg is fried whole, and marinated in sweet soy sauce, shallots, and red chili peppers for that extra kick. Definitely a must-order.
If you're hankering for some spice, Indonesian food is the perfect panacea. The Eggplant Curry ($7.99) is rich, smooth, and fiery hot. Spiced with garlic and ginger, it goes great with some steamed rice.
The Central Java Spiced Chicken Curry ($7.99) is also another spicy delight, albeit one with slightly sweet undertones. Made with turmeric and coriander, and mixed with vegetables such as cabbage, it's very satisfying.
Speaking of Central Java, the Central Java Marinated Tofu ($5.95) is a great intermezzo from all the spicy foods. The tofu is very firm and marinated liberally with various spices and palm sugar, resulting in a rich, almost sweet flavour profile.
For those less adventurous, the Chicken Curry Spring Rolls ($6.95) are a safe bet. Perfectly fried and stuffed with tender chicken meat, it's perhaps not the most unique dish, but a serviceable one nonetheless.
Finally, the Salad with Bali Sauce ($5.95) is essentially a form of urap . It features a semi-dry salad made with steamed vegetables with liberal servings of coconut shavings, along with garlic and turmeric spices. It's a nice and light contrast to the heavy flavours of the meal.
