Sushi Train
When I first walked by the new-ish restaurant at Yonge and Bloor, I stopped and peered into the window like a 7 year old kid waiting for Santa. There it was, sushi...going around and around and around on a track! I was totally geeked!
Sadly I didn't go in that night, cause well, I had other plans but I kept it in the back of my mind until the other night.
I was on my way to see Volver at the Varsity Theatre when Mr. C and I decided that we'd meet up after work for a bite to eat. Funnily enough after a few texts back and forth, we both realized that we were on the same train of thought--the Sushi Train!
Arriving at the restaurant I was glad to see that Mr.C had parked himself right up at the bar. Perfect. I sat down beside him and because he had been waiting for a smidge, he already received the lowdown on the sitch.
Infront of me was a black box with drawers. Inside the various drawers were my chopsticks, slices of ginger, napkins and soya sauce. Beside the box was my own mini stash of wasabi with the cutest dollhouse sized spoon. To the left of the bigger box was a mini faucet with a big red button. This was my own personal tap of hot water. What for, you ask? Well, on the lower level there was a "train track" of tea cups, assorted single serve teas, wasabi/soya sauce dishes passing by me at a leisurely rate. Enthoused by the whole ordeal, I snatched up a cup, a packet of black tea and pushed the cup up against the red button to serve myself a hot tea immediately. Who would have though tea could be so much fun????
I was also served a complementary bowl of miso soup and I downed that even faster than I drank my tea. De-lish and just what I was looking for after being out in the cold.
Upon further inspection (and having Mr. C point me towards the menu) the various dishes choo-chooing by us were all set upon different coloured plates. Dependent on what you decide to eat, the coloured plates indicate how much the dish is going to cost you.
I was psyched. So many yummy dishes passing by--but none too fast that you couldn't catch up. Yellow plates started at the lowest cost of $2.50 and went up to the blue plates at $5.50...but to be completely honest, after awhile the cost factor didn't even matter anymore--I ended up choosing what looked good. I had an assortment of sushi, sashimi, gyoza and tempura and was completely enthralled with every dish, each one better than the last.
As well as choosing dishes from the conveyor belt, you can also order full dishes off of the menu if you are looking for something a little more specific or substantial but after about 20 dollars worth of plates, miso soup and tea--I was more than satisfied.
The interior design of the restaurant was very modern and chic as well. A little more upscale than a majority of the sushi bars in the area. The neat part about the conveyor belt was that even if you sit at the booths at the back of the restaurant, the tea and sushi dishes will pass by you there as well. After taking a break to "powder my nose", the calming blue washrooms were the most delightful washrooms I've experienced in awhile. Very modern and very clean.
As Mr. C and I polished off our last couple of dishes, Sushi Train was getting busier and busier and I can definitely see why. It's a bit of a novelty to watch your food pass by and see what you're missing but never fear, if you want it, it'll be back around again. As the "track" emptied, the Sushi Chefs were right there filling in the empty space with a new coloured dish. The staff were also quite friendly because even after snapping so many photos in their establishment our waitress came over and offered to take a picture of Mr. C and I [photo not included on account of a bad hair day].
You may notice in the reflection within the photo above, that Sushi Train is located on Yonge Street right across from The Brass Rail , that being said, I'm sure it won't be hard to find. So, get aboard that Sushi Train and get a Choo Chew Chewin'!
