Samosa King

Samosa King is one of Scarborough’s busiest Indian restaurants, and for good reason — it's also one of the most affordable options in the area.

This bustling eatery can be found in a small plaza at the corner of Middlefield and Finch.

The sign above the door is decorated with bright red and gold and the tiled floors are covered with beautiful Indian-style rugs, but these details are often the last things on visitors' minds.

samosa kingSamosa King's most notable features are its extensive menu and the sizable crowd that it attracts. On weekdays, the line stretches from the back of the shop all the way to the front door.

Thankfully, efficient service more than makes up for the crowd: the staff assemble orders quickly and methodically, and a separate line-up is provided for those who want to order from the hot table.

These crispy triangular pastries are bigger than their price tag might lead you to believe. For $1, you can get three huge samosas, each stuffed with potatoes, carrots and peas.

Chicken samosas are also available, with two pieces coming to only $1.50.samosa kingIf you're looking for something a bit smaller, dhal vada is another solid choice. Much like the samosas, you can get three fritters for $1. It's also a great way to warm up on cold days.samosa kingSamosa King offers daily specials, which change throughout the week. When we visited, they were serving three types of veggie curry — potato, lentil and spinach, respectively — with rice for $2.99.

You can double up on your favourite type of curry or try a little bit of each.

I personally enjoyed seeing the different colours, not to mention tasting the contrasting flavours. The spinach curry was a little too bitter for my liking, but the potato and lentil curries were both excellent.

samosa kingNaan ($1.49) is served warm and pairs well with all three curries. Tear off pieces to dip into the sauce or fill it with veggies and turn it into a wrap.samosa kingSweets are priced by weight, but can be purchased individually or in bulk.samosa kingBarfi ($1.95) is a light dessert with a firm, fudge-like consistency. Its taste is fairly mild, but its bright colours help it stand out among other similar sweets.samosa king
