This Sunday July 20th, Rogers Picnic has some seriously stiff competition in the famous traveling summer Hip Hop all-star tour, Rock the Bells.

Rock the Bells music festival has grown into the premier hip hop festival in North America. Every year, since it's inception in 2003, the festival keeps growing into a stronger community, showcasing the best in new and old-school hip hop.

This year the most anticipated headliners on the tour are A Tribe Called Quest and West Coast troupe The Pharcyde, who re-united this year for the festival. This shows the caliber that this festival has to offer, when someone like Mos Def is not considered a headliner.

This weekend Beats, Breaks & Culture will celebrate its fifth year anniversary, bringing some of the best new music and culture to the Harbourfront Centre.

This year in particular the line up is quite impressive, with some of the best national and international talent such as Ladytron and Crystal Castles on the bill.

And did I mention that admission is FREE?

I've always found photography depicting skateboard culture very compelling, and one of my main sources of inspiration. I don't know what it is about it, but it always evokes in me a certain sense of rawness and truth in the way the sport is documented, including the lives of those around it.

The NXNE music festival wrapped up last Sunday, and I'm still trying to recuperate from the intense three days I spent jumping from venue to venue, taking in an eclectic mix of shows.

Overall my experience this year at NXNE was memorable. From Monotonix (who gave the craziest in-store performance at Sonic Boom) to Ricca Razor Sharp (who rapped his funny lyrics, full of energy, to a handful of people at The Boat like they were hundreds), NXNE seems to get better every year.

One of my favourite things about living in Toronto is the way this city's ethnic neighbourhoods come to life when international sporting events happen around the world. Futbol tournaments tend to stand out in particular, since it's the most worldly of sports.

South Rakkas Crew are probably the most innovative Dancehall producers right now. Based in Orlando Florida, they have pushed a new breed of sound into Dancehall - some people are describing it as Electro-Dancehall. Breaking all the rules, chopping up samples in new ways and bringing new influences into the mix, these guys have have made their sound unique and dance floors very happy.

Tycho is playing this Sunday April 20th at the Drake Underground, and If you're a synth lover like me, you don't want to miss this one.

I was first introduced to Tycho when I purchased a T-shirt from ISO50, later to realize both where projects from San Fransisco based artist/designer/producer Scott Hansen.

As Tycho, Hansen manages to produce beautiful atmospheric soundscapes full of warmth and depth. Reminiscent of Boards of Canada, he creates highly emotional and melodic ambient music, while keeping it warm and colorful.
