Your Feel Good Soap Company
Your Feel Good Soap Company is something of a one of a kind in Toronto. Even as places like Sweet Flour Bake Shop , Yogurty's , and Enzo Pizza foster the create-it-yourself vibe, this shop takes it a step further. The latest in personalized products is a natural fit birthed from the minds of Karina Fuentes, her husband Scott Robinson, and Scott's mother Margo. Located just north of Queen on Markham, Your Feel Good Soap Company is home to a wide variety of bath and beauty products, from soaps and shampoos to lotions and body butters, all of which can be customized to your liking.
Unlike soap shops like Lush and the Body Shop, which tend to overpower the senses with strong scents that can be detected from blocks away, Your Feel Good Soap Company is proudly modest in all ways. Karina will greet you with a big smile and an obvious enthusiasm for her shop's offerings. The light scent coming from the bar soaps is pleasantly subtle, leaving you wanting to pick each one up and breathe deeply to bring each scent to life. Each bar of soap is created in house and takes six weeks to set. The most popular scents are always at the ready and customized scents can be made, as long as you're willing to wait. If you're impatient, fear not: lots of lotions and soaps await your personal scent selections and can be mixed and packaged right before your eyes.
Behind the sales counter you'll find nearly a dozen transparent dispensers, each filled with an all-natural, unscented lotion or soap product. The first step is to choose your base. There's body lotions that range from the light to those better suited as an after-shave or after-sun lotion, thanks to an ingredient list that includes Aloe Vera. Also on offer are organic shampoos and conditioners and hand and body washes. For my base, I chose Grandma Lupita's body mousse, a rich cream named after Karina's grandmother, who created the frothy lotion in her youth. (Note: Grandma Lupita's body mousse is the only product that is not 100% natural.)
Step two is where your odorless soap or lotion comes to life with your choice of 50 scents. You can choose from essential oils like Grapefruit, Lavendar, Rosemary, Mandarin, Vanilla, Bergamot, and Ylang Ylang. Or, should you feel more creative, there's also the option of scents like Let Them Eat Cake, Peaches For Me, Rosie Cheeks, Candy Is Dandy, and Summer Fiesta. A handy menu listing descriptions of each scent can be found at your fingertips.
After much debate, I decided to mix Ylang Ylang with Summer Fiesta, which I deemed Bottled Summer. Although it's a blast to sniff and smell each flavour potential, the absolute best part about the scent step is the total control you have over your product's potency. I only wanted a hint of Ylang Ylang, focusing more on Summer Fiesta. And I didn't want the overall scent to be too strong. Measuring the oil in Tantos (1.2 mL meaning "part" in Spanish), Karina starts with a little and works with you through the gradual addition of oil until the scent is to your liking. Of course, step two can be skipped if you prefer unscented products.
The third and final step is all about how much you'd like. Choose from a jar or a bottle in sizes Chico (250 grams), Mediano (250 grams), or Grande (450 grams) â each of which can be refilled on your next visit. Once your container is filled and sealed, the process is finished and you're left with a soap or lotion unique to your tastes. Prices range anywhere from $8.00 to $30.00 depending on the level of customization you seek.
