Lab Consignment Avenue Road
LAB Consignment has moved uptown, and with its new north address comes a collection of a slightly higher caliber. Unlike its soon-to-close shop at Ossington and Queen, there are very few vintage items here. Instead you'll find gorgeous designer pieces in practically pristine condition, taking the form of of flowy, draped Yves Saint Laurent dresses that boast their freshness with still-intact tags ($699).
UPDATE: The Avenue Road location of LAB Consignment has now closed. For product and showroom info check out their web site .
The new LAB uptown takes over the space of Labels or Love on Avenue north of Lawrence, also assuming its merchandise and list of about 100 regular consigners. LAB owner Lauren Baker tells me she was approached by Meytal Algranti from Labels or Love, who was looking for someone to take over her business. "She read about me and gave me a call. After a few meetings, I think we both realized it was something that could work." Baker got the keys to her new shop on February 1.
LAB is in the midst of closing up shop down on Ossington in a space it shares with Chosen and Silver Falls Vintage . Initially, Baker had thought she could run both stores, but she soon came to the conclusion that it would be next to impossible. As of March, this will be the only LAB location.
"It's been a huge, huge change to move uptown," she tells me looking visibly fatigued (I mean that in the nicest way possible, I swear!). "I was constantly looking for somewhere to move — somewhere with a little more room and a storefront — and I've definitely got that here."
Baker admits that her vision has evolved with her transition to uptown and deviation from vintage, and expects she'll miss her former digs when she finally settles for good on Avenue. "It's where I live and where I play," she says, referring to Ossington. "I know the people there, my favourite coffee shops are there, and I miss being in the back of Silver Falls for sure. That said, the customers I have met here have been extremely nice."
They range in age from 20 to 75, but they are united in their appreciation for high-end women's fashions. Along with the expected brands — Louis Vuitton, Prada, Marc Jacobs, Coach, and so forth — LAB has a growing collection of pieces by Canadian designers including Jeremy Laing, Andy Thê-Anh, and Greta Constantine.
Baker points out just a few of the favourites she currently has in her new shop, which include a pair of Louis Vuitton epi leather bags in brown and black ($899), pink Chanel suede mules ($199), and the above-mentioned YSL dress. "I'm getting new things in constantly," Lauren says. "And now, I finally have the room to show it off."
